Hans Albrecht

Hans Albrecht was born in Linz, Austria on 27th April 1931. He was rescued from the Nazis shortly before WWII by being brought to England on the Kindertransport in May 1939. As a child with learning difficulties and autism, Hans had a difficult experience; moving frequently between foster carers throughout the UK. He lived with his mother for brief periods after her escape from the war. Eventually, as an adult, Hans settled in a residential home in Brighton run by Norwood Social Care.

Hans was very happy in Brighton for many years and became an established and much-loved figure, visited by many. His kind and gentle nature endeared him to many people across the city and beyond. The Hans Albrecht Foundation was set up after his death in 2015 to honour his memory by helping to raise awareness about children and young people experiencing similar hardships to those faced by Hans.

Upon his death in August 2015 Hans left a small legacy to Alan Rosenbach, one of his most frequent visitors. Alan decided to invest the money into establishing the Hans Albrecht Foundation in Hans' memory, and is now one of our trustees.

Hans lived a remarkable life both before and after he came to England. He made many friends and added a richness to the lives of all he knew. He found contentment in Brighton and said "this home here is the best home that I have lived in and I was in no home more happier than here."
